I went to Mexico to dive for a week in Cozumel with a group organised by a company called ‘Over the Rainbow’. I quickly realised why people enjoyed coming back year after year to dive with this company and to be with divers they knew. Over the Rainbow, now renamed Scubameat scubameat.com is run by Rhia Weinhaus who personally takes diving trips around the world. Rhia is the most warm and caring person one could wish to meet A few months before the trip she unexpectedly rang me in the UK to chat and make sure I was comfortable with all the arrangements. As a new and older diver that is something I appreciated and found really reassuring. Her enthusiasm for the trip was infectious and when we met in Cozumel she was still talking with joy and delight about the fish and animals she’d seen on the dives that day. Then, she wanted to know all about me; my ability, any concerns and what kind of diving I’d like to do during the week.
On this Cozumel trip Rhia had a hand-picked team who live in Portland (USA). Diving is their passion and life. Nic, a Dive Master was her assistant and Rory, was a seventeen year old who was being trained in the fine art of becoming a Scuba Concierge before going on to be a Dive Master.
Rhia, I observed, is someone who helps people have fun and achieve their diving adventures and dreams. That includes older women like me who don’t necessarily want to dive deep or macho style but want see gorgeous fish and spectacular corals.
